Welcome to Shameless Daughter!
This is a blog about freedom, restoration and hope! I am on a mission to help people get free from the grip of shame and condemnation on their lives. I called this first post ‘Back to Eden Beloved’, because to become truly shameless you have to understand where shame originated. Maybe your asking yourself, “What is shame and what does it have to do with me?” Let’s first define shame and explore its affects on our lives.
Shame is described by Webster’s Dictionary as “a painful emotion caused by consciousness of guilt, shortcoming or impropriety.”
Shame is experienced when you feel like you have failed, missed the mark or did not meet your own expectations or the expectations of others.
Psychology Today gives us a clearer definition and describes shame as “an internal state of inadequacy, unworthiness, dishonor, regret, or disconnection…shame can lead us to feel as though our whole self is flawed, bad or subject to exclusion, it motivates us to hide or to do something to save face.”
These definitions are so powerful and true. Does any of this sound familiar? So many of us deal with shame every day of our lives and we don’t even realize it. Here is a few ideas of how shame can operate:
- Shame is a bully.
- Shame makes you feel small and inadequate.
- Shame says you are a failure.
- Shame says God is mad at you.
- Shame teaches you to fear.
- Shame tells you to hide.
- Shame will keep you from your destiny.
Shame doesn’t say, “You made a mistake.” Shame says, “You are a mistake.”
Where it All Began
Let’s go back to the garden, the Garden of Eden where shame first rared its head. We are going to review this well known story so stick with me!
God desired companionship and a partnership so He formed Adam and placed him in the Garden of Eden. Adam is the first of his kind – perfect and unflawed. Here Adam has fellowship with God, purpose and his every need met. Something is missing though!
God declares, “it’s not good for man to be alone.” He then decides to create woman. She is perfect as well and Adam loves her. It’s a beautiful love story made for the likes of Hallmark . The writer of Genesis gives us an idea of what their world was like in Genesis 2:25:
25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.Genesis 2:18-25 NLT
No shame y’all! No shame. This is one of my favorite scriptures because this is how our world, our relationships and our souls were meant to be – shameless.
God gives Adam a home, relationship with His Creator, an assignment and now a wife. He is set! What is awesome about this is God only gave them ONE boundary – don’t eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or they would die. Pretty clear right?
God told him he could eat freely from everything else. He had so much freedom. God was not holding out on Him. He was protecting His Creation and giving them the opportunity to trust Him.
But there is an adversary in their midst.
The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” 2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. 3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’” 4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”Genesis 3:1-4 NLT
And you know the rest, SHE ATE IT. She believed her enemy. She believed his lies.
Her agreement with him changed the future of her world, our world, forever.
After listening to her enemy and believing his lies she gave some to her husband to eat. When they ate their eyes were opened and the realized they were naked.
“7 ..they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.”Genesis 3:7 NLT
They felt exposed, vulnerable and ashamed. Their shameless, wholesome, and beautiful world was shattered.
“When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. The Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’ He replied, ‘I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.‘Genesis 3:8-10
Where are you?
I love this because it clearly shows God’s heart for humanity.
Adam and Eve screwed up the world by not trusting God’s heart and by listening to their enemy. Yet, you do not see God reprimanding them in the beginning.
He is looking for them.
He is seeking them out to connect with them.
He is calling out for them.
You can just hear Him now,
Beloved? Son? Where are you?
How many times have you felt God reaching out to you but you ignored His voice? Or maybe you wanted to connect with God but you were like the first family, hiding behind your walls, afraid God was angry with you?
God is calling out to you in His love. Despite your flaws, failures and sin – God is still pursuing you!
That is what Shameless Daughter is all about – the struggle we all feel or have felt at some point in our life – that God is distant, angry, cold, or ashamed of us.
It is about freedom from the voice of shame in our lives that drives us away from the Father’s love.
It is about freedom from performance and an invitation authentic relationship.
It is about freedom from anxiety and depression.
It is about knowing who God made you to be and who you are in Jesus Christ.
It is about making mistakes and forgiving yourself quickly because God has forgiven you.
It is about being His shameless child – fully loved, chosen, and known.
This story is not over for Adam, Eve or for us! There is way more to be discussed. Now, I want to invite you on this journey with me, to become His shameless daughter, His shameless child! Together we will discover more truths in God’s word and just how much freedom is available to us as God’s children!
I am so excited to connect with each of you, hear your stories and explore God together!
